My dad's extremely embarrassing announcement at my cousins wedding celebration
  • 03
A few years ago, my cousin (dads side) and his wife had a dinner for both of their entire extended families to celebrate their elopement from a few weeks earlier. It was pretty much a delayed wedding reception. The dinner also happened to be on my birthday.

My dad and his brother (father of the groom) don't really get along and are in constant competition over everything. My very mature father apparently just couldn't stand that the day was about his brothers family - he told me that he was going to get up and announce it was my birthday as my uncle was giving a speech. thanking everyone for coming. I was immediately horrified and begged him not to. But he

completely ignored me and stood up, clinked his glass and proceeded to announce it was my birthday and suggested that everyone wish me a happy birthday. This was met with a very awkward "happy birthday" and scattered clapping from a few of the guests. It was even worse because I had never even met anyone from the brides family.

I have never been so mortified in my entire life. I ended up pulling my cousin and his wife aside later and apologized. They both knew how our parents were so, thankfully, laughed it off and understood. My dad still doesn't understand "what the big deal is".

redessa01 Your dad knows he just set the stage for his brother to pull this same thing at your (or your siblings) future wedding, right? Only he'll have a bigger, more attention grabbing announcement, like announcing your cousin is expecting a baby or something.

Tell your dad to consider how angry he'll be when his own child's spotlight is stolen and ask why he thought it was okay to do that to cousin. This event wasn't about his and uncle's petty one upmanship.

Bottle_Nachos Most often your own parents are more of a child than you ever were allowed to be, your dad knows that you would take the fall and apologize on his behalf. Sorry this happened to you!

thatattyguy "The big deal is you embarassed us because you have this juvenile competition with your brother, everyone knows about it, and you couldn't stand the day being about him and his family. Therapy, dad. Try some."

Admirable Coff... It's completely mortifying when adults try to get back. at each other by using their children. Especially against their children's wishes!

LilOrchid Jenny I would have left the room the second he told me what he had planned.

magentamuse Sounds like a narc parent. A narcissist doesn't understand because they don't think they have anything to apologize for. They'd like attention and why shouldn't the world revolve around them?
